Second Light Shelter + Services announced today that a Director of Operations will join the community effort to reach functional zero homelessness. Nate Schwiethale, better known as “Officer Nate”, will begin this role at Second Light in November.

Schwiethale recently announced his retirement from the City of Wichita Police Department where he served for more than 25 years. Schwiethale was also the founder and field operations leader of the Homeless Outreach Team (HOT), a cross-sector team of multiple community partners credited with helping more than 1,700 individuals exit homelessness. He is nationally recognized as an expert in homeless systems and serves as a speaker for many national organizations on the topic.

He is known for his work in solving complex operational challenges and creating outcome-driven systems that truly help our unhoused neighbors and improve our community.” Schwiethale joins Josh Siebenaler who was named Executive Director of Second Light in October

“We are excited to bring Nate’s leadership and experience in community collaboration to Second Light. In his role, he will lead day-to-day operations working with our many partners to continue creating a safe, dignified and outcome-driven experience for our guests,” said Siebenaler.

“After 25 years serving the City of Wichita as a police officer on the Homeless Outreach Team, I am honored to step into this new role at Second Light bringing my knowledge base of working with the homeless where I can also continue to serve the community,” said Schwiethale. “Second Light has a unique opportunity to make long-term change in the lives of our unhoused neighbors and our community. I look forward to working with staff, partners, and providers in this capacity.”
